Author: SW aka SkyblueSw aka jeidtheskyisblue
Disclaimer: I do not own Gone With The Wind, and am making no money off of this story. I just wrote it for fun. Please do not share this story anywhere else without getting my permission first.
Summary: This is the second part of the Wife or Mistress Trilogy. This is more of a companion piece then a sequel to Wife or Mistress. It's Rhett's P.O.V. during the same time as Wife or Mistress.
Notes: This is is finished and I will be posting the whole story at once. Since it took me about 20 years to continue the story. I have not started on the third part of the Trilogy I just hope it doesn't take me another 20 years to get that one finished.

Rhett Butler laughed at himself as he looked out the carriage window, he was certainly a fool. How had he gotten himself into this mess, he wasn't ready sure. All it took was a weeping eyed southern belle, well to be more accurate just one certain weeping eyed southern belle. For if he fell for any crying southern belle, he would have married that girl years ago and still be perceived as a southern gentleman.
"Really Scarlett you know I'm not a marrying man" Rhett recalled telling the very slim looking woman before him. After she had proposed marriage to him. That in itself made Rhett feel a heel. He kept repeating it that same line to her a few times more. And Rhett wasn't sure who it had been for more, himself or her. Even laughing at Scarlett's ludicrous proposal could stop Rhett from truly taking in Scarlett's form head to toe.
She must truly be in desperate need to come to him begging for marriage. Scarlett was always a prideful little cat and wouldn't humble herself that way before him if she had any other choice.
Rhett could clearly hear her words as if she had just spoken them, "Rhett, you say you're not the marrying kind. Well I am, if you want me you're going to have to marry me. " And want her God help him he did, it was like a disease. He kept trying to kill it, but it only came back stronger than before. This deep, unending want of Scarlett O'Hara.
Rhett had been surprised when he had been able to ask with jest in his voice, "Why do you suddenly want my hand in marriage, Scarlett?"
"Truth, Rhett, I need three hundred dollars for taxes. If I don't get the money, Tara will be taken from me. I can't allow that to happen. " Scarlett had replied. Of course, it had to do with money, Rhett couldn't believe he had let himself hope just a little that she had some feelings for him. But no, Scarlett only saw him as a bank.
"I'm touched, Scarlett, that you thought of me first to offer yourself in marriage to. But as you can see, I'm not going anywhere. I'm sure knowing you, you'll find someone to marry you. "Rhett said this, not trying to hide his anger. But letting it out, not liking the thought of being made a fool of, if only it was for a few minutes. Thanking she might care for him. Besides, he was in jail, it wasn't like he could marry her if he wanted to. Let some other unlucky fool become her victim.
"Rhett, you know no one else has that kind of money. I need your help please" Scarlett begged.
"Scarlett, why would I want to marry you? You're in love with Ashley Wilkes and as old-fashioned as this may sound, if I ever marry I want my wife to be in love with me. "Rhett said this as he held Scarlett by the shoulders, searching her eyes for something that he was sure wouldn't be there. Only surprise entered his eyes because he did find something there. What it meant, Rhett wasn't completely sure, but before he could stop himself he stated "I have a deal for you Scarlett. You can take it or leave it. "
"Go ahead Rhett." was Scarlett's reply. Rhett could see she was desperate and that's what made his proposal all the more despicable.
"We want two different things Scarlett. You want a husband for his money. If I had to guess it's only because of your Mother that you've even thought of marriage. "Rhett chuckle as he seen Scarlett's eyes go wide."I want your body I've never hid that fact have I my dear? You wouldn't be here now if I had."
Rhett was waiting for Scarlett at his words to puff up a rightous anger and leave the firehouse. When instead she nodded her head he continue "There no reason why we can't both have what we want. You get your husband I get my Mistress. "
The relief on Scarlett face as she realized that Rhett was offering to marry her made Rhett almost stopped from completeing his offer.
"Don't act so surprised Scarlett isn't this what you wanted? Before we get into my reasons. I wanted to let you know I'm sorry to hear of your Mother's passing. "
"That's kind of you to say Rhett" Scarlett said as tears entered her eyes. All Rhett wanted to do at this moment was take Scarlett into his arms comfort her for the loss of her Mother. But he had to continue with his proposal or Rhett knew he would never get the nerve to ask again.
The relief on Scarlett face as she realized that Rhett was offering to marry her made Rhett almost stop from completing his offer.
"You might not think me kind, once you hear my next words. . . . You see Scarlett, I will marry you on one condition and one condition only. This is the unbreakable condition. If you ever utter the words I'm Mrs. Rhett Butler, I'll divorce you and take Tara away. “Scarlett's eyes closed at this. Yes, she would get her husband, but to the rest of the world Rhett would get his Mistress.
"Come now Scarlett, tell me the truth like you have so far today. . . The only reason you want to marry me is because of your Mother, this way your dear beloved saint of a Mother can look down from heaven smiling on you knowing you're married. "Rhett was mocking her now, hoping to have her Irish flare up and have Scarlett march out that door. Perhaps even be given a slap or two before she did. Rhett could clearly see he had earned one or two.
"Yes, Rhett, truth be told I was coming here to offer to be your Mistress." Rhett smirked, he had figured that out himself earlier. "But my Mother's teaching wouldn't leave me. I would lose Tara before becoming your Mistress. "Scarlett said hotly, Rhett was just waiting now for the yelling to began and the slap to be given. But a minute past and Scarlett did not storm out of the room, Rhett realized that Scarlett was accepting his proposal.
"I understand, and now that I've accepted your offer, I must ask when would you like to get married?" Rhett asked in shock, not quite believing he was going to be a married man soon.
"Well as soon as you get out of here of course." Scarlett stated, looking around his cell. "Rhett, how long are you going to be in here?" Scarlett asked.
"A few more days at the most. Yo. . "Before Rhett could finish his sentence, Scarlett let out "Thank goodness I was afraid you would be in here for weeks. "
"I'm touched my pet, can't wait to get your hands on my money, can you?" Rhett asked in jest, smiling tenderly at her. Rhett couldn't help but be happy, the woman he loved was going to be marrying him soon, even if he wasn't a marrying man.
"Rhett, what an awful thing to say." Scarlett said and smiled.
"Is that smile for me, my pet?" Rhett asked as he felt all his love for Scarlett pour out, not being able to stop himself for returning her smile.
Rhett had to chuckle at himself, the very next day he had gotten out of jail after paying a few guards more than he should have. But he couldn't have taken the chance that Scarlett would get that tax money some other way.
Rhett had shown up on Miss Pitypatt's doorstep that next day, asking Scarlett, "Are you ready to become Mrs. Butler?" And ready she had been.
Rhett laughed at himself now, thinking about how he as soon as he was released he had hightailed it to the Catholic Church. Talking to the Priest and setting up the wedding to take place as soon as he could return with Scarlett, had taken a lot of smooth talking. But Rhett explained to the Priest that his Wife's reputation was what matter most, along with his future step-son's. That his reputation was in tatters, and while he tried to repair it, he needed silence on their marriage. The Priest had of course pointed out being a married man might just do the trick of helping to repair his reputation. But Rhett stressed the fact he didn't have the time to repair his reputation, because soon after marrying he would have to leave for business.
Business that would keep him away from his new Wife, who had to stay behind to care for her family. They had run into disrepair because of the war and could not do without Scarlett. After reassuring the Priest, he did indeed love his future wife and would take care of her and her young son. The Priest relented and agree to marry them, and also gave his promise of silence on the marriage. But he would mark down their marriage in the church's records, so it would be legal.
Rhett could still remember saying his vows to Scarlett, and she repeating hers to him. It was a surreal moment for Rhett Butler, one he had never thought he would take part in. For he truly believed himself to always be a bachelor, and now giving that up was something that seemed like a dream. Especially because his wife wasn't in madly in love with him. Rhett always thought if he ever married, his wife would love him and only him.
But he had fallen victim to the charms of one southern belle who didn't give a fig about his feelings at all. Well, maybe that wasn't completely true, Rhett knew Scarlett sometimes did like him. They seem to get along well as long as they never discuss Mr. Wilkes.
Rhett had rented a room for Scarlett at the hotel he was staying at that was only a door down from his own. Of course, she did not use that room, it was only for appearance she spent the night with him. Their wedding night was one Rhett enjoyed beyond belief, he finally had the woman he longed for after so long in his arms. It was a night he would never forget.
Scarlett had returned to the Hamilton house the next day with a story of having gotten word from her Grandfather from a lawyer he sent wanting her come visit him in Savannah. That the lawyer had rented Scarlett a room for the night because it had gotten so late after their discussions. If anyone had actually brought that story, Rhett didn't care. Knowing Scarlett as he did, he was sure his wife had sold that story with a cherry on top.
Savannah really was used as an excuse for their short honeymoon. Rhett had taken them by train to Augusta instead. Remembering back to those days, Rhett would say Scarlett and he never left their room anyless it was absolutely necessary. After all they were on their honeymoon, well Scarlett was, and he was just shacking up with his Mistress.
One he had wanted for years, and wasn't going to loss out on the pleasure having gotten her right where he wanted her could give them both. Rarely leaving the hotel room also stopped people from asking questions about them.
Because Rhett wasn't sure at the time if he would have been able to not tell complete strangers that Scarlett was his Wife. As happy as he was to have her on his arm, he wanted to shout to the world that she belonged to him.
Rhett knew if he did, that Scarlett would realize his feelings for her ran deeper than just lust. And he couldn't have that. No, if his feelings were based just on lust alone, Rhett knew he could have found a woman similar to Scarlett and used her body until his lust was burned away.
It was her love, Rhett wanted most of all. And he hated that it made him a love sick fool for Scarlett. So he made sure to treat her as he always did, never showing true emotion to Scarlett. She didn't seem to mind that Rhett could tell.
Augusta had been chosen as their honeymoon spot because of it being only a little over a day's train ride. And far enough away that no one who knew Scarlett be there, hopefully. After all, Rhett didn't know at that point if the two weeks were going to be the only time he would get to spend with his Mistress if Scarlett would beg off coming to him after Tara's taxes had been paid.
Of course the taxes had been paid before they had left for Augusta, Rhett had his lawyer pay them that very morning. He wasn't going to not hold up his end of their bargain when Scarlett was holding hers.
Rhett ran a hand through his hair, hating remembering the way he treated Scarlett during their honeymoon. He had made sure not to buy her anything the whole trip but a few nightgowns, and those she didn't get to wear for very long. He didn't want her to think too highly of his feelings for her, so he had stopped himself from spoiling her. Also, he didn't have access to all his funds, so Rhett couldn't spoil her to the height he wanted to anyway.
Rhett laughed to himself, remembering one gift he gave Scarlett the morning they depart from Augusta.
"Rhett where have you been all morning" Scarlett asked as soon as her husband entered their suite.
"I have brought you a gift" Rhett replied then opened his hand to show a single gold wedding band. The smile on Scarlett's face made Rhett almost close his hand and ran out of the room.
"It's not what you're thinking in that pretty little head of yours" Rhett answered curtly, "You are indeed a widow and are in need of a wedding band are you not? We don't want any gentlemen callers getting the wrong idea about your being single, do we?"
"Jealous, someone might dare court me?" Scarlett responded with her dimples showing as she smiled up at Rhett, "Are you going to put it on my finger?"
Biting back a nasty retort, Rhett came back with "I just thought it would be easier for you to have the ring to keep suitors away. After all, how would you explain having a living husband if they wanted to marry you, My Pet?"
"Oh fiddle dee how you do go on" Scarlett counter "Just give me the ring I will put it on myself"
Rhett just laughed as he watched Scarlett do just that, hoping she didn't notice the glean of joy in his eyes watching as his ring claimed her finger. Hoping that soon he could claim her heart as well.

Rhett hated that after their short honeymoon, returning to Atlanta without Scarlett by his side was the lonest he had ever been. How he had made it a full week before he had darker Tara's doorstep, Rhett wasn't really sure. He just knew he had to see Scarlett again.
The visit had been short only for the afternoon, Rhett detested that he had to leave his Wife and stepson behind with the likes of Ashley Wilkes. It had been fun to needle Scarlett with Mr. Wilkes question of how Scarlett, and he had meet. But it didn't last long enough to make the memory more enjoyable. Of course Mrs. Wilkes had been there, so Rhett couldn't needle them more on that subject.
Rhett did get to tease Scarlett about her new wedding ring and wasn't surprised she had convinced everyone but her sister Suellen, that her grandfather had brought it for her, along with saving Tara.
Rhett would bet Scarlett's ability to pull the wool over anyone eyes more than anyone else he knew. All she had to do with smile and show her dimples, and most people believed whatever she said. Well most men did and Rhett found that was all Scarlett seemed to need to believe her. And one Melanie Wilkes, why she did Rhett wasn't sure, but dear sweet innocent Melanie believed in Scarlett like no one else did.
That trip also was very eye-opening for Rhett, seeing just how run down Tara had become. It was true that it was his first time there, but anyone could see the disrepair the Plantation had fallen in. The rugs were all wore down, the curtains were torn down. The furniture had seen better days as well.
If Rhett hadn't known from Scarlett herself, he would have from just being at Tara the awful shape the O'Hara's a were in. Rhett had gotten himself a farm that need a lot of repairs and a lot of money threw at it before it could ever make any money again.
And Rhett knew Scarlett would never let Tara leave her family's hands, not when she married him to save it. If Scarlett loved something she was unrelenting, until her dying breath Rhett was sure she would not let Tara go. She perhaps loved Tara more than she did Mr. Wilkes.
Getting to see Wade had been the second-best part of the trip down to Tara. He enjoyed spending time with his stepson. Hearing Wade tell him all about things at Tara tore at Rhett's heart. The young boy had told of help picking cotton and other household chores he would do. Something a child of his age never should have to do.
Rhett had already set up a trust for Wade, not depending on Rhett's relationship with Scarlett whatsoever. He would see that the young boy got a proper education, along with enough money to start his own law firm or another business he would choose. But that was a long way off, Wade was still just a little boy.
It was easier to think of Wade than to remember Scarlett and how a week after his visit to Tara she had come to Atlanta. It had taken everything in Rhett not to run to PittyPat Hamilton's house right away.
No he had kept himself busy trying to get all his affairs in order, so he could leave Atlanta in order to get everything ready for his trip overseas to get his hands back on his money, all that gold wanting for him in banks in England.
Besides, he couldn't let Scarlett think he was waiting for her with bells on. He could not allow her to believe he thought of her more than a Mistress. Even if it left Rhett cheerful knowing Scarlett had come to Atlanta to see him. One night a week after Scarlett had returned to Atlanta, Rhett had one too many drinks and couldn't stay away a minute longer. It seemed like such a great idea to his drunken mind to visit his Wife in the middle of the night.
Rhett could clearly remember even with his impaired mind at the time hearing Scarlett's tell him "No, Rhett, it wouldn't be right sneaking around in Aunt Pitty's house."
His reaction had been to retort back "If that's the way you feel Scarlett, I shall take my leave now, I'm sure to find someone to keep me company tonight."
Rhett could see the terror in Scarlett's eyes that he might just do what he said. But he was still surprised when she spoke next with "We have to be quiet, Rhett, Aunt Pitty's room is right next to mine."
Rhett was still in shock to this day that he had spent that night at Miss Hamilton's house, in the very next bedroom from Miss PittyPat herself. Scarlett had been so willing in his arms that night. Rhett couldn't believe the things he would do just to be around Scarlett. He knew he was a fool for his Wife, just how big of a one was yet to be seen.
The next two months, Rhett had not let worrying about his money being overseas away from his control factor into his mind much. Getting to spend time with Scarlett and Wade was much more enjoyable to let unpleasant thoughts occupied his time. At first after that night spent at PittyPat's Rhett had started escorting Scarlett all over town. Like he had during the war, only this time the war wasn't on going and people paid more attention to a pretty young Widow being seen around town with a reprobate like him.
If it had just been Scarlett's reputation on the line, Rhett wouldn't have cared so much about the talk. But Wade was so young, and Rhett didn't want the boy ostracized from Atlanta society. So when Rhett pick up Scarlett, he asked for Wade to join them. The three of them would go for carriage rides and picnics together. Taking Wade places and teaching him things was something Rhett enjoyed and knew the boy did as well. If Scarlett and he ever lived together, Rhett knew having Wade around would not be a problem at all.
Bidding farewell to Scarlett and Wade had not be easy when he did leave that time. But Rhett had to go check on banks he had left some of his money in up north. Well, more like that his lawyers had left in banks up north. He needed that money, especially if he wanted to afford a Wife and child. He could only stay in the south so long without having access to his funds. The question, Rhett remember thinking at the time, had been did he leave alone to get those funds or take along Scarlett?
*-*-*
Rhett was still deciding what he should do about his trip overseas when he returned to Atlanta a month later. He knew one thing right away, he had to see Scarlett because if he didn't take her with him, it would be many months before he got to see her and Wade again.
So he sent a telegram to Tara for Scarlett, Rhett had hoped the reply he received with her train information meant she was as eager to see him as he was her. He got to the train station a half hour early waiting to make sure he didn't miss the train.
It ate at Rhett that Ashley still lived at Tara and with his being away he didn't know just how much alone time Scarlett got to spend with her brother-in-law. Of course, they had a whole house full of chaperones, but that didn't stop Rhett's jealousy. It that was something Rhett hated feeling. He had always been so proud of not being a jealous person. He would laugh at others over their jealous behavior, and now here he was being what he hated.
The second Wade saw him he went running screaming at the top of his lungs "Uncle Rhett, Uncle Rhett" Rhett picked the small boy up smiling, obviously happy to see his stepson. Looking over the boy's head, Rhett saw Scarlett she was smiling, and he returned one to her.
"Don't I get a greeting too?" Scarlett asked playfully as Rhett with Wade in his arms walked up to her.
"Of course, my dear." Rhett said then kissed her politely on the cheek, mindful of the people watching them. Not wanting to cause more talk about their relationship.
"How long are you in town for, Rhett?" Scarlett asked after they had gotten all the bags and collected Prissy. Wade who was still in Rhett's arms looked up into his stepfather's eyes curious to know the answer as well.
"I'm not rightfully sure yet, Scarlett. " Was the only answer Mother and son received. Before Scarlett could question him farther, they were at Miss Pittypat's carriage. Uncle Peter's disapproval of Rhett's presence showed on his dark face. Rhett smiled at the man who was the real head of Pittypat's household. Then gently handed Wade to Peter, so he could put the boy in the carriage.
Helping Scarlett into Pitty's carriage, Rhett then said as soon as Scarlett was in "I'll see you tomorrow Mrs. Hamilton for lunch." and with the tip of his hat Rhett watched as the carriage rolled away. It gave him a few more hours to think of what he wanted to say to his secret Wife.
Rhett got to the restaurant early and sat waiting for Scarlett, after an hour had passed his patience was running thin. So deep in thought he didn't notice Scarlett as she arrived and took her seat across from him until she said "Penny for your thoughts, Rhett"
Instead of answering, he just stared at Scarlett, and was relieved when the waiter appeared and distracted Scarlett for the moment on what she wanted for lunch. Not really caring for food at the moment, Rhett just ordered the same as Scarlett to save time and get the waiter to leave sooner.
As soon as the waiter was far enough away from their table, Rhett asked, "Scarlett, why are you here?"
Rhett noticed the confused look on Scarlett face at his question. My God, sometimes she was such a child. Laughing cruelly, Rhett asked plainly, without amusement in his voice. "You can't see anything unless it's put right in front of your face, can you, Scarlett?"
"I don't know what you mean, Rhett; I'm here because you asked me to be." Rhett shook his head.
"That's not what I meant, my pet, Why are you here with me? Tara is paid in full, I've taken care that you need never worry of losing it again. "
"So I'll ask again, Why are you here with me, Scarlett? You must be aware of the gossip about us?" Rhett asked, this time locking eyes with Scarlett. The whole time he had been in the restaurant waiting for Scarlett, he had seen the other patrons eyes on him waiting for his lunch companion to appear. To give them something more to talk about, he was sure.
"Are you worried about your reputation; Rhett, is that what this is all about? Of course, I've been informed of myself being called your Mistress. But I'm here because no matter what people may think of me or say, I'm your wife. And I take my job as such very serious. "Scarlett said the latter in a whisper.
Scarlett's answer had taken Rhett by surprise, she had sounded possessive of him which startled Rhett.
No knowing how to respond to that Rhett said nothing. He was fortunate when the waiter return with a glass of water for Scarlett. The food came soon after, which kept Rhett from having to make small talk with his Wife.
By the time they had finished eating, Rhett had found he liked the idea of Scarlett taking her job of being his wife serious. But he wanted to see if she really meant it or if it was just for show.
"I must say, Scarlett, you look beautiful today." Rhett said with a mischief grin he added. "Now, if you would kindly follow me back to my room, I'll show you how beautiful you really are?"
There he had thrown out his test to see Scarlett true feelings, if she was just stringing him along. Are if she really cared somewhat for him. If she came with him, her reputation would be ruined, but it would prove she cared for him. Rhett looked into Scarlett eyes and didn't show his shock as she nodded her head and made ready to follow him as he stood up.
*-*-*-*
"Aren't you scared, my pet, someone will see you?" Rhett asked, his head popped up, resting on his right hand as he laid in his bed. He had woken a few minutes ago, and noticed Scarlett wasn't in bed with him any longer. It didn't take him but a moment to find her, all he had to do was look up next to the window that looked down on the street.
"I hate to disappoint you, Rhett, but why would I care if someone saw me standing at your bedroom window? Everyone saw me follow you up here many hours ago. "Scarlett asked, turning to face her lover. His grin made it apparent he was enjoying her answer. "Really Rhett, does it matter if I'm seen in your bedroom, everyone already knows what we've been doing?" Scarlett questioned her husband.
Laughing, Rhett replied "Come here, Mrs. Butler" Scarlett smiled and slowly walked the few steps to the bed then allowed Rhett to gentle pull her down next to him. "You should know by now, Scarlett, nothing so trivial matters to me. If you want to stand there all day and wave at everyone passing by, I couldn't care less." Rhett broke to kiss Scarlett's forehead." But I don't think you are doing so wearing my robe will go over too well for what's left of your reputation. " Rhett jested as he pulled his robe off Scarlett's shoulders.
Shaking her head, Scarlett mockingly pushed Rhett back. "I'm touched Rhett, truly I am, that you care so much about my reputation. But I'm afraid, Mr. Butler, it's beyond repair. "Scarlett whispered the latter.
Pulling her closer to himself, Rhett kissed Scarlett's lips and smiled down at her sweetly. "Of course I care, Scarlett, One has to know the reputation of one's friends, don't they?"
Pulling herself out of Rhett's arms with a dull pain in her emerald eyes, Scarlett adjusted Rhett's robe and left her husband's bed with him in it behind. "I have to be going Rhett," she paused then continued, "Wade's waiting for me."
"Far be it from me to keep a Mother from her child. I guess I'll just have to wait until tomorrow to see you again. "Rhett said as he rolled onto his back, watching Scarlett every move. Looking to see if he could read her emotions to see if she was really leaving to get back to Wade or if she was running away from him.
"We'll have to meet somewhere; I forgot to tell you Aunt Pittypat has banned you from coming into her house." Scarlett said as she picked up pieces of her clothes.
"I was wondering when she would get around to it. Do you think Miss Hamilton would actually faint it I showed up at her door? You know, Scarlett, not one of those fake ones she pulls all the time?" Rhett asked as his laughter mixed in with his words.
"I think she would" Scarlett said as she crossed the room to enter the dressing room. So after she finished getting dressed, she left to return to her Aunt's house.
*-*-*-*
Lunches, carriage rides, and late afternoon walks were what filled Scarlett's days with Rhett as two months passed. Two months also full of dirty looks and smart remarks whenever Scarlett passed by a group of ladies. Rhett never mentioned the looks or whispers they received when in public. He knew it frustrated Scarlett to no end. But if she truly wanted to be with him as more than just a Mistress, she would have to get use to how people treated him.
Well, at least here in the South people treated him this way, just not usually in Atlanta because of him being a blockage runner during the war. In Charleston, though, he was always treat like this, no one of good breeding would have anything to do with him. His own Mother had to sneak to see him.
Rhett could see Scarlett was scheming, he wasn't a fool, he knew she wanted him to admit they were married. She was trying her little southern belle ways on him, which he saw through within a second. But it was fun to see what scheme she would come up with next, to try and get her way. It was something to look forward to every day.
Lunch that day, Rhett wasn't sure what game Scarlett was playing because she wouldn't break eye contact with him through the whole meal.
"I have something for you, Scarlett". Rhett said as he took out of his coat pocket a long jewelry box.
Rhett slid the box to her side of the table, his eyes were still locked on hers. Smiling like a child on Christmas day, she opened it. Sucking in breath, Scarlett's fingers ran over the diamond bracelet.
"Thank you, Rhett, I love it" Scarlett whispered as their waiter walked by.
"No need to thank me, Scarlett, just seeing your face light up the second you opened the box was enough thanks for me. It's my duty as your husband to surround you with things as beautiful as you" Rhett stated. "But if you feel you must thank me, I have a few suggestions as to how"
"Let me guess" Scarlett cut in, "all these suggestions take place in your room?" Rhett laughed as he nodded his head. It seemed Scarlett had over the last few months learned what he expected as a thank you for presents.
"So what do you say, Scarlett? Are you really thankful for your gift?" Rhett asked then chuckled.
"You know I am" Scarlett replied as she took her new bracelet out of its box and smiled at it.
“Allow me” Rhett said as he leaned his arms over the table and took Scarlett's bracelet. He gently fastens it to her wrist and was surprised to see a look of desire in Scarlett's eyes as his hand brushed her arm. He knew right then that she would be joining him up in his hotel room shortly.
*-*-*-*
Rhett's smug smile lite up his face as he watched a slumbering Scarlett, while he enjoyed seeing how young she looked in sleep. Rhett knew that they couldn't stay in bed for the rest of the day. No matter how much that idea appealed to him. He had awakened an hour earlier and had already gotten dressed for dinner. Knowing just how to wake his sleeping bride, Rhett picked up the end of the blanket, then commenced to tickling Scarlett's feet.
It didn't take long before he heard Scarlett plead in between pearls of laughter, "Stop. . . Please"
When her pleads were met on deaf ears, Scarlett opened her eyes and begged, "Rhett. . . Stop"
"Time to get up Mrs. Butler, I have your favorite restaurant, reserving us a table" looking at his pocket watch Rhett chuckled then finished "You have a little over an hour until we leave."
"Rhett after I dress there is something I want to talk to you about" Scarlett said. Rhett felt his face harden at her words, he knew what she wanted to talk about, and he did not want to have that conversation right now.
Helping Scarlett out of the bed, Rhett watched as she disappeared into the dressing room. He went to wait into his setting room. Rhett had hoped that tonight would be a pleasant evening, but he had a feeling it wasn't going to go the way he hoped for. Rhett wasn't stupid, Scarlett could not keep portraying herself as his Mistress, not when she was really his Wife.
Rhett had never wanted a Wife, he really still didn't want one, but he did want Scarlett. And it looked like he was going to have to make a choice soon. Because Scarlett was finally going to put her foot down, he was sure to demanded him to claim her as his Wife.
Rhett was taken out of his thoughts by a knock at his door. Not expecting any company, Rhett was at a loss as to who could be paying him a call. So he left his seat and walked to open the door and was in for a surprise to find Ashley Wilkes on the other side looking ready to kill him.
"Mr. Wilkes" Rhett said, blocking his doorway, not wanting the ash blonde headed man to enter his room. He did not want the other gentleman to know Scarlett was inside.
"I've come to retrieve Scarlett" Ashley stated as he pushed his way past Rhett. This wasn't the place he ever dreamed he would have to be. How had Scarlett gotten herself so entwined with this Butler man?
"I'm not sure if I understand" Rhett said, hoping Scarlett would not open the door and enter the setting room. Perhaps he could lead Mr. Wilkes to believe that Scarlett wasn't with him. The last thing he wanted to do right now was have a fight with Ashley Wilkes over Scarlett. Not when he wasn't sure just want his relationship really was with Scarlett.
"Don't think me stupid Mr. Butler, all of Atlanta knows she spends her days here with you" Ashley bitterly stated. "Like I've said, I'm here to bring Scarlett home"
Before Rhett could respond, Scarlett opened the setting room door with a smile, an air of confidence played on her lips. A second later, said smile, was replaced with a look of disbelief at the sight of Ashley Wilkes standing by the door with a look of shame and reproach on his face.
Emerald eyes met Rhett's almost black ones, he held a smile on his face, one, so fake Rhett was sure everyone in the room could see right through it. "My dear Mrs. Hamilton, aren't you going to say Hello to our company?" Rhett asked with a voice hard as nails. So angry at himself for not stopping Mr. Wilkes for entering his room. Oh, what a fine mess this way, his Wife's beloved finding her with her lover.
"Yes of course, it's so good to see you Ashley, won't you set down?" Scarlett asked. Rhett wasn't sure how she could act like this was just another visit. That she hadn't been caught in an unmarried man's room. "Ashley, there's nothing wrong at Tara, is there?" Scarlett asked, acting innocent, as to why he would be here.
"Scarlett, please don't play dumb, I've caught you" Ashley stated with little emotion in his voice. "I've come to take you home; Wade is in the carriage with Uncle Peter waiting for us."
"I'm not going back to Tara Ashley, and you can't make me" Scarlett said then turned to look at her husband, who was laughing quietly. Rhett found this whole situation absurd, he couldn't help but laugh at it. Here he was the secret husband who could stop all of this drama if he just uttered the words 'She's my Wife'. But that was something Rhett would never do, not until he was sure of Scarlett's feelings for him. Or more importantly, her feeling for Mr. Wilkes.
"If you don't mind my asking, Captain Butler, Why are you laughing? I find this whole mess you've made not very funny. "Ashley asked, he had to stop himself before words no lady should hear came out of his mouth.
"I'm afraid you wouldn't understand." Rhett replied as he stood and walked up to Scarlett. "It looks as if my pet, you're needed at home. I'll take a rain check for dinner. "Rhett said then kissed Scarlett on the lips, as the kiss deepened Scarlett's arms wrapped around him, and she pulled Rhett closer.
“Umm huh” Ashley cleared his throat. "It's time to go Scarlett" Ashley said opening the door.
"I'm not going, which part of that do you not understand?" Scarlett yelled out, apparently not caring if all of Atlanta heard.
"Captain Butler, I must insist you tell Mrs. Hamilton to leave your room." Ashley said, in the role of gentleman.
"Mr. Wilkes, if you'll give us a moment alone?" Rhett asked, Ashley nodded his head then silently left
the room. Scarlett looked at Rhett with wide eyes. When the door was closed, Rhett laughed as he ran a hand through Scarlett's thick black hair. "Mrs. Butler, I do believe we've shocked your beloved."
"Rhett, I don't love him" Scarlett whispered then added before she knew it "I love you"
Rhett's lips moved but nothing came out, he was bewildered, by her bold claim of love for him. Why did she have to tell him now. Why couldn't she had told him this news yesterday when he might have believed her then. Now, though, it just seemed Scarlett would say anything to try to get herself out of the situation she found herself in.
"Scarlett, you should go back to Tara" Rhett said as he turned his back on his wife.
"I won't leave you Rhett, I love you" Scarlett said to her husband's back. "Rhett, if we just told everyone we're married, things would be so much easier." Scarlett said. Of course that's what she wanted, thought Rhett bitterly.
"Easier for who, Scarlett?. . You?" Rhett asked, fire in his eyes as he turned to look her in the eyes. "I told you once, Scarlett, that if I married, I wanted my wife to love me. I refuse to be a laughingstock even for you, my pet"
"No one is laughing at you Rhett, you're a selfish cad. I'm the one getting laughed at and looked down upon just for being with you. "Scarlett's Irish temper came to life, making her emerald eyes flash. At any other time, Rhett would have enjoyed seeing her lose her temper so fiercely. But his own temper was starting to boil over.
"Tomorrow it's your turn to not be able to hold your head up in town, I'm going to stand in the middle of Peachtree Street and yell out that you're my husband. But you're too yellow to admit it. "Scarlett said as she then slapped Rhett across his tan face.
Rhett took a few steps back as his hand rubbed his face. "You'll do no such thing, Mrs. Hamilton. Not unless you want to live out in the street. Because that's where you and your whole family will be if you utter one word about being my wife. "Rhett stated, his voice was cold and held a bitter tone to it. Then, with a cruel smile, Rhett laughed out. "Scarlett, don't ever try to use my love for you against me. I'm not blind, Scarlett, and I'm not a fool either like your country beaus were. Who believes the lies that come out of your sweet lips.
"But I do love you, Rhett" Scarlett said like a little girl who's favorite toy was being taken from her and there wasn't anything she could do but set back and watch. Rhett wasn't going to fall for her little poor little girl trick.
"Drop the act Scarlett, I'm not buying it" Rhett replied, never looking Scarlett in the eyes. Not wanting to get caught in her trap.
"It's not an act, Rhett; I'm in love with you. Why is it okay for you to love me, but I'm not allowed to love you?" Scarlett asked as tears streamed down her crimson color face.
"Prove your love then Mrs. Butler" Rhett said this locking eyes with Scarlett, "I was going to ask you tonight to join me on a trip to Europe that I have to leave on tomorrow. " Scarlett didn't have to know Rhett hadn't truly made his mind up on asking her that or not, "But instead if you do as you say love me, while I'm gone keep the promise you made to me and not utter a word about our marriage." Rhett finished with a smirk.
"If that's the only way to prove my love for you, I'll do it. I won't like it, but I'll do it. "Scarlett answered. Rhett was surprised that she agreed, but he nodded his head and watched as she walked to the door and left his room.
Rhett knew he couldn't say in Atlanta another day, so the next morning he packed up and left on the morning train, wanting to get as far away from Scarlett as possible. Before, he recanted his earlier words to Scarlett and begged her and Wade to just come away with him. To leave Atlanta behind, to make a home anywhere else in the world.
Rhett had gone to Europe just as he told Scarlett he would. Getting all his finances in order had taken a lot more time than he had anticipated. Once done, Rhett was recklessly wandering around Europe for a month, trying not to think of his Wife and her decoration of love.
Rhett hadn't received any letters from his lawyer about Scarlett trying to contact him. Rhett had been disappointed until he remembers he had never given Scarlett his lawyer's information in the first place.
He was being a coward, Rhett hated how he was running away from Scarlett and their marriage, afraid to find her love wasn't real.
Convinced it was time to come home, because night after night, his dreams were filled with Scarlett in his arms. Rhett booked passage on the first ship sailing for Charleston, of course he had to wait two weeks before he could depart, but it made him feel like he wasn't running away anymore.
Rhett was angry when his date for departure was pushed back by two weeks because of bad weather. After finally deciding to return to Scarlett, it seemed to Rhett like the world was playing a cruel joke on him. Because the day before his ship was to sail, he caught a fever and couldn't get out of bed the next morning. So he missed his ship and had to wait another month before he could book another passage.
Rhett had made sure to use the extra time to buy presents for Scarlett and Wade. He didn't want to return empty-handed. Even if Scarlett didn't truly love him, he shouldn't have just run out on her like that.
Their first wedding anniversary was coming up soon, so Rhett had decided to get Scarlett a huge emerald ring as a gift, something he hated but knew she would love. It was silly of him to buy anything to celebrate something he hadn't wanted to tell anyone about. But Rhett found he really did want to celebrate it.
So here Rhett was in a carriage on his way to Tara once again. Hoping to find a Wife who did indeed love him when he arrived. And not an angry Scarlett who wanted nothing to do with him. It was a chance he had to take, one that a gambler like himself knew was all or nothing. Either Rhett ended up with everything he wanted, or with a broken heart.
As Rhett's carriage turned onto the drive of Tara he held his breath knowing he would be getting an answer to his question soon if Scarlett truly loved him or not. Looking up, Rhett saw Tara's house ahead, it was time to finally get his answer.
The End
